Zimmerman died while fighting a fire in the George Schiering and Son Electrical Appliance Store, 6123 Hamilton Avenue. He suffered a fatal collapse while pulling a hose into the smoke filled building. Zimmerman was 57 years old and had been on the department for 37 years. He lived with his wife at 1413 Reid Ave, College Hill and was the father of two children.
