Kief, a thirteen year veteran, died while fighting a fire in a Price Hill home, 3938 S. Clerose Circle, that had been struck by lightning around 2 am. Kief, Fireman John Puls, and Captain Herbert Holtman were in the bedroom when intense heat caused a smoke explosion in the closet. The blast stunned the men, Puls and Holtman stumbled out of the room. Kief apparently tried to get to the window but was overcome. He was wearing a mask, but the coroner's office said that he died of smoke inhalation. Kief was the father of seven children and a graduate of Elder High School. He lived with his family at 1023 Woodbriar Lane, Covedale.
