Captain Cordes was attempting to place a plank beneath the wheels of the apparatus after it became mired in the mud while attempting to untangle a flag pole rope. The captain was taken to General Hospital where he died two days later. Cordes was a 30 year veteran of the department. He was 59 years old. Cordes lived with his wife at 1807 Huron Avenue. He left his wife and two sons, Fireman Joseph Cordes and Henry Cordes Jr.
