While fighting a fire on the roof of 2629 Moorman Avenue, Walsh was on a ladder that became overbalanced and threw him head long to the ground less than twenty feet below. Two other firemen clung to the ladder and did not fall. Walsh was appointed to the department December 5, 1893. He lived with his wife Nellie at 2939 Cleinview Avenue.
