Captain Haggerty fell while on the way to the basement of the 24's house at Considine and Warsaw Avenues. He was preparing to take a bath before his noon time meal. He was taken to General Hospital, by Fire Department Ambulance, where he died that afternoon. He was appointed August 3, 1898. He served in companies 8, 9, 17, 41 and 24. He had been with 24's for twelve years. He was survived by his wife Dolores, two sons, Edward Haggerty a city fireman at Engine 42 and Robert, and a daughter Dolores.
