Schonecker was killed when a the east wall of the Newton Tea and Spice Company collapsed following an explosion during a fire in the building. Schonecker died in the receiving ward at General Hospital. He and other members were directing streams of water into the building when the wall suddenly collapsed as a result of an explosion inside the building. Schonecker lived with his wife and two small children at 1535 Freeman Avenue.
