Buckley, 35, and three other firemen were killed and fourteen injured when the east wall of the Newton Tea and Spice Company collapsed on them while they were playing hose streams into the building during a fire. The wall collapsed without warning as a result of an explosion in the building. The firemen were working from the ramp to the Suspension Bridge when the wall fell on them. Buckley lived long enough at General Hospital to see his wife and sister. He lived at 2617 Hackberry Street with his wife and two small children.
