On February 4, 1911, While climbing a high trestle to get at the blaze in the Marmet Coal Elevator,
Capt McDermott lost his footing and fell to the ground 30 feet below. After several surgeries,
McDermott succumbed to his injuries. Capt McDermott was 30 years old and lived with his mother at
906 Freeman Avenue.
